Inspection Methods

NDT Methods Available

The appropriate NDT method is selected based on alloy, casting geometry, and the discontinuity type being examined.

Most Specified

Radiographic Testing (RT)

Internal volumetric examination — detects porosity, shrinkage, inclusions, and cold shuts not visible externally.

Acceptance StandardMSS SP-55, ASTM E94, or customer specification
Applicable AlloysAll alloys

Dye Penetrant (PT)

Surface examination — detects cracks, porosity, and linear indications open to the surface.

Acceptance StandardASTM E165 or customer specification
Applicable AlloysAll non-porous alloys

Magnetic Particle (MT)

Surface and near-surface examination of ferromagnetic materials.

Acceptance StandardASTM E709 or customer specification
Applicable AlloysIron, carbon steel, some stainless

Visual Inspection

Surface examination for visible discontinuities, dimensional gross checks, and cosmetic acceptance.

Acceptance StandardMSS SP-55 or customer specification
Applicable AlloysAll alloys — standard on every casting

Why Ironbound

NDT Inspection Advantages

Radiographic Testing (RT)

X-ray or gamma-ray examination detects internal voids, shrinkage, porosity, and inclusions — evaluated per MSS SP-55 or customer-specified acceptance criteria. Film and digital RT available.

Dye Penetrant Inspection (PT)

Liquid penetrant examination detects surface-connected discontinuities on all non-porous alloys. Applied to bronze, aluminum, nickel, Monel, and stainless steel castings.

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT)

MT detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic alloys (iron, some stainless). Applied where specified by customer or casting standard.

Qualified NDT Personnel

NDT operators qualified per SNT-TC-1A. Third-party Level II and Level III NDT coordination available for Navy witness inspections and customer-witnessed tests.
