Inspection Methods
The appropriate NDT method is selected based on alloy, casting geometry, and the discontinuity type being examined.
Internal volumetric examination — detects porosity, shrinkage, inclusions, and cold shuts not visible externally.
Surface examination — detects cracks, porosity, and linear indications open to the surface.
Surface and near-surface examination of ferromagnetic materials.
Surface examination for visible discontinuities, dimensional gross checks, and cosmetic acceptance.
Why Ironbound
X-ray or gamma-ray examination detects internal voids, shrinkage, porosity, and inclusions — evaluated per MSS SP-55 or customer-specified acceptance criteria. Film and digital RT available.
Liquid penetrant examination detects surface-connected discontinuities on all non-porous alloys. Applied to bronze, aluminum, nickel, Monel, and stainless steel castings.
MT detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic alloys (iron, some stainless). Applied where specified by customer or casting standard.
NDT operators qualified per SNT-TC-1A. Third-party Level II and Level III NDT coordination available for Navy witness inspections and customer-witnessed tests.
