Test Types

Pressure Testing Methods

The test type is determined by the casting application, specification requirements, and customer drawing notes.

Most Common

Hydrostatic Shell Test

Full casting body pressurized to verify pressure boundary integrity of the casting shell — primary test for valve bodies and pressure vessels.

Test Pressure1.5x rating or per drawing
Hold TimeMinimum 30 seconds to 3 minutes per specification

Seat / Closure Test

Valve seat integrity test — low-pressure gas or high-pressure water test of the seating surfaces to verify sealing performance.

Test PressurePer valve specification or customer requirement
Hold TimePer applicable standard

Leak Test

Low-pressure pneumatic or hydraulic leak detection test — used where a full hydrostatic shell test would overstress a thin-wall casting.

Test PressureCustomer-specified low pressure
Hold TimePer customer requirement

Why Ironbound

Hydrostatic Testing Advantages

In-House Test Capability

Hydrostatic pressure testing performed at our Newark foundry — no outside test lab required. Testing is scheduled as part of the machining and inspection sequence before shipping.

All Pressure-Boundary Castings

Testing applies to valve bodies, pump housings, pipe fittings, manifolds, and any casting that forms a pressure boundary in service — bronze, aluminum, nickel, Monel, and stainless.

Customer Specification

Test pressure, hold time, and acceptance criteria are set by customer drawing or referenced standard — ASME, MSS, MIL-SPEC, or customer-defined. We test to your requirement.

Full Test Documentation

Test report including test pressure, hold time, date, acceptance status, and operator signature furnished with every casting. Records retained for traceability.

Specifications

Technical Specifications

Test mediumWater (hydrostatic) or air/nitrogen (pneumatic) per customer specification
Test pressurePer customer drawing or applicable standard — typically 1.5x to 2x design pressure
Hold time30 seconds minimum; longer holds per customer requirement or specification
Acceptance criteriaZero leakage during hold period; no visible weeping or seepage
Pressure measurementCalibrated pressure gauge with current calibration certificate
Maximum test pressureUp to 5,000 psi hydrostatic; consult engineering for higher pressure requirements

Need Pressure Testing?

Pressure testing is scheduled as part of your machining and inspection order. Send us your drawing with test requirements and we will build it into the plan.
